"Our Final Goodbye"

Good evening Ladies and Gentleman, my name is Joseph Lim-Effendy, and I am proud to have had the honor of serving as Senior Class President of this fine Class of 2009!

When we first walked up the large and daunting steps of the front porch September, 7, 2005 – the very first day of high school, Mark Keppel High was sufficiently more whole and not under construction. On that very first day, during lunch we instinctively huddled into our comfort zones, however, over the past four years and many lunches we magically mixed and came together as the Mark Keppel Class of 2009.

Just as they demolished the small gym and a majority of our school, we demolished the walls that divided us into Brightwood, Ynez, Highlands, Repetto, Garvey and all the others school, and it no longer mattered where we came from, but rather where we were. It has been a very very very VERY long four years, but today as I stand here minutes away from receiving my diploma, the last four years have seem so incredibly short. I can still remember how excited we all were when the football team won 3 games freshman year, YES 3 games, and what the school looked like before construction.

We wouldn’t have made it here without our parents who deserve so much thanks for chauffeuring us everywhere for the first 16 years, paying for our gas after that, and all the unconditional love and support you’ve given to us. From all the late nights to tonight’s Grad Night, thank you for everything you have done for us.

Another vital part of high school were our dedicated, supportive, and encouraging teacher who we’ve learned so much from these past four years. Thank you for your all your hard work in and out of the class. You have truly touched and shaped our lives.

Although we learned so much in class, a lot of things learned at in High School occurred outside class like - how to ask a girl to a dance, how to pull an all nighter while still looking really good the next day. How to evade street cleaning tickets every Monday on Sierra Vista—or at least try to; how to project your voice over the loud and often annoying construction; how to ignore the fire alarms when taking AP tests; and most importantly, how to make amazing friends.

High school was a time where we got close to so many people – and I’m not talking about the closeness during passing periods. I’m talking about the remarkable people we’ve met and shared high school with that we want to have as friends 40+ years from now. Friends that we shared hotel rooms with at State tournaments. Friends that plan surprise birthday parties during Calculus airband practice. Friends that we hypothetically tell all our secrets to through catharsis. Friends that we’ve spent our whole lives with. Friends that we never ever want to let go of.

A flurry of emotions fills my heart at this very moment in time – some happy to leave this place we’ve called school and some extremely sad to leave this place we’ve called home. I’m scared, like most of you, to take our first steps out of high school and into real world, but have faith in the brains in your head and the feet in your shoes for you can steer yourself any direction you choose.

The class of 2009 not only leaves behind our legacy, but also tree that will be planted near the entrance of new science building in the lunch courts as a reminder that the class of 2009 still thrives and grows even after we’ve graduated and left. One of my very good friends here at Keppel once told me that when a tree loses a branch, what grows in its place is often stronger. Each of us Seniors is this tree that have and will continue to experience many raging storms, occasional lightning strikes, strong winds, and ultimately fallen branches, but when that happen always continue to reach for the sky and grow because these trial and tribulations are what shape you into the amazing person I know you all can become.

Even though this is the last time we may all be together as the class of 2009, you will always have the knowledge, experiences, and friendships you made here, and when you’re real Seniors, 65- years young, the same memories and experience you made in high school will still linger through the hallways of your mind.

Our lives have been under construction for the past 12 years. This long process is not yet complete, but high school has been that exciting time where we’ve laid down the foundation and seen our lives come to shape. This graduation is our very own topping off party.

Class of 2009, thank you for everything - for every memory, every smile, every experience, every hello and this final goodbye. Be proud that you graduated from the best high school in the district. Be proud that you endured construction and became a part of Keppel history. But most importantly, be proud that you will forever be a Mark Keppel Aztec.

And I’d like to end in the words of Dr.Suess, Seniors, don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.

I love you class of 2009. Goodluck and see you all in 10 years!

Public transit through the jungles of Los Angeles

What originally was a plan to Getty "Gettysburg" Museum warped into an array of colorful train lines and a true sense of what it is to be an Angeleno. For the eleven of us, growing up in a secluded neighborhood, often referred to as a "bubble", we do not often taste the roots of LA. Yes we do watch much news and media coverage on the 10 'o clock news and we breathe the same air as the other 3.8 million people in the city, but do we really understand the true sense of living in LA? Simply riding from the gold line from Pasadena to Union Station, then the purple line to Wilshire and Vermont and then several buses around K-town and finally the red line to Hollywood and Highland, we shared the trains and buses with people of all ethnicities, people of all ages, and people of all different histories. There was a man trying to sell little trinkets on the train to earn a living. There was a young man passing out flyers to promote a cause. Teenagers discreetly ditching school, still in uniform with their friends. Rugged men in paint splatter jeans and shirts and dirt caked hands waiting to arrive home. Business men and women lugging briefcases and sporting four inch heels as they board and exit the train, trekking up three flights of stairs. Humans with all different plans, different ambitions, different priorities, all gathered in a train with a similiar direction: wherever the train takes them. We were tourists within our own home, clueless to how we navigated transit, but still managable with the help of our fellow Angelenos. Yet, learning to navigate wasn't half as bad; we made it back home. On the ride back, we were the kids once thirsty for adventure, now in a sleepy slumber, just like the man next to us, coming home from a long day's work in construction.

I discovered a couple days ago one of my photographs pirated, photoshopped, and posted on Person Z's website without any aknowledgement from/permission from/or credit to me. In other words, to the unknowing eye, Person Z claims the photo as her own. Person Z, I've lost all trust and respect for you. And btw, thanks for sharing several months ago that you really enjoyed that photograph and my photographying advice to you. And thanks for blocking me afterwards for no apparent reason.

Life for some time now has been somewhat depressing and you feel 'under the weather'. You are looking for a means by which you can escape from all the pressures of everyday life. (I'm not so sure about being depressed and escaping the pressures of life, though lately there have been some high and low points...they have been more out of the mundane-ness of my daily routine as a HS senior.) But you must remember that the 'Past does not equal 'Tomorrow'. You are seeking a way to escape from all the trials and tribulations that oppress you at this time, but at least you haven't given up - if one pattern of behaviour doesn't seem to work then you'll change it for another.

Which ever way you turn you feel that you are being utterly thwarted. There is considerable conflict in the air but you will stick to your beliefs and not be deterred in endeavouring to attain your objectives.

It's the old old story - I am misunderstood (or maybe just a bit enigmatic...I can't even figure out myself sometimes...too many ambitions and life/now goals) - my partner (be it in your private life or in business) just doesn't understand me and YOU also believe at this time that you are being completely MISUNDERSTOOD by one and all. It then obviously follows that you naturally feel inhibited and not appreciated. It is perhaps because of this belief that you feel compelled to stand back and let the rest of the world go by. As for developing a firm relationship - inwardly deep down in your subconscious mind you are wary of even trying to get close to another person because you feel that if you open up your heart and feelings you are sure to get hurt. Since you are living in a society where close relationships are the norm, you feel that there is that need to conform, but any close relationships of any magnitude that you may have tried in the past have unfortunately left you without any sense of emotional involvement.

For whatever the reason, you find it extremely difficult to sustain relationships - that is to sustain them in the manner that you would wish. You are a very gentle sort of person, full of feeling, sensitivity and susceptible to love and affection, looking and longing for a partner with whom you can enjoy 'All things bright and beautiful' - someone with whom you can seek out the more esoteric things of life. But up to now this person has only existed in your imagination. You are very choosy, appreciative, refined and extremely artistic in temperament and it is your hope to seek others who will allow you to form and express your own taste and judgement and who at the same time may assist you in your intellectual or artistic growth.

Matters are not all that they would appear to be and you are critical of the existing conditions which you feel are confused and disorganised. You are therefore looking for a modus operendi which will simplify the situation so that you will be able to see the 'trees in the woods'.

Quo Vadis Journal 21 Review

I received this wonderful planner a couple months ago for a test drive and quite frankly, it has exceeded all my expectations. First off, in the last several years I have been accustomed to weekly planners, which in essence sufficed my needs for daily reminders and "to do's," but never really for anything more than just that. I've also tried to write in notebooks and nice, pretty, "stationery" diaries but just found them all too clumsy and expensive. With Journal 21 and it's daily pages, I now use it as a place of musing for short accounts of activities through out my day. In fact, it now is the center of my blogging activity as I try to devise daily topics and thoughts through this handy planner. (Though half the time the thoughts on these beautiful acid free pages don't make it to the blog...it's a work in progress)

In addition, it's design is quite sturdy with a sewn binding which allows the planner to lay flat when open. The paper PEFC certified and does not stain through with the use of inky pen nor is the paper flimsy and thin.

On the sides of each line, there are also time listings in 30 minute intervals starting from 8 am to 9 pm. I don't utilize that function as much.

I absolutely love the perforated edges. Gives an easy way to access the current page and gives a funky accent to the planner as the crescent shape increases in thickness as the year progresses.

Like for it's size. Neither too immensely big like a 8x10 notebook, nor too petite like a 4x6 diary, it is the perfect size that I can carry around everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE.

I AM A SECOND SEMESTER SENIOR!

Liberation is sweet, maybe a little too sweet when senioritis infects like an epidemic in a crowded stadium, but fear not.

First off, Happy Chinese New Years! My room is all tidied and swept and it is the first time in three months that I can see an entire floorboard unobstructed by books or clothes in my room. So yesterday I drove by local to Chinatown (I know, who the hell in LA doesn't take freeway) and was almost runned over by aggressive pedestrians and angry Asian drivers--Bethina, the aggressive syndrome has arrived from the east! Following that was a strenuous process searching for a parking spot, walking to the pork/chicken/duck place, patiently waiting in a line that extended out the shop, when a woman walked right passed the 10s of people patiently awaiting their turn, and placed her order. Just. Like. That. Then, it got ugly. Perhaps I wasn't paying too attentively to the order of events, or I just zoned out watching my grandfather's brother take orders and walk in and out of the back room, but I was rudely awaken by two Chinese ladies screaming at each other in, not Chinese, but in impeccable broken English:

"You cut in line! I was here first, look at all people waiting in line-la!"
"You stupid! You don't know what talking about! She took order, I pay, I leave!"

And it went on, the two going at each other in English, until the cashier nervously rang the woman up, and let her grab her goods and waddle out the store with a line of people rapping their canes, and giving her a cold hard steely stare.

Frankly the only thing that affect any considerable thought to me the screaming English. Chinatown? English? Of all the places, I would think the brawl be in Chinese.

First Day of My Life

After a couple of interviews, I must declare I liked my last one best. Conversational, intriguing, and quirky--it was an early afternoon coffee meet up than a morning, clammy, rigid interrogation. However, at one point I had the terrible dread that he would ask a generic question for which I had no solid answer for when he started with "In 10-15 years from now..." In retrospect, how silly of me to think that from a man who graduated from this fine University. His question was followed by, "on what magazine cover do you see yourself on and for what reason(s)?" You wouldn't believed how tickled I was when he finished the question. And my favorite part of the interview? Being able to turn the interview around and ask the questions. Of course, that is standard of an interviewer to say "Now I've asked all my questions, do you have any questions" but hey, switching roles for a good 15 minutes is more than just "So, tell me how the food is like."

In other news, shortly after I returned home, I received this:

Resolutions, 2009 edition

I initially wrote a long post about the year in retrospect and planned to post it (as seen by the title under this post.) But since the new year already set in, I'll just keep that post for my own eyes and begin 2009 with something fresh.

Here are a few of my resolutions this year:
1. MANAGE and UTILIZE TIME effectively!
2. Get vaccinated EARLY for Senioritis. (courtesy of David Sun)
3. Set a routine for physical activity of at least 30 minutes every other day.
4. Grow taller! (hey, never hurts to try. i KID) REAL RES: continue to be outgoing
5. Be a better CSF president.
6. Actively blog a 2-3 three times a week! Must stop neglecting this dear blog!
7. Smile & be happy...and oh, marry JIM STURGESS<3

Quite a few goals, and some more written on paper. As noted, I need to learn to make better use of my time instead of idly wasting it away...

Upon reflection on my last post (some months ago), I apparently suffered a severe case of teenage angst and perhaps could still be undergoing some fits of existential angst and growing pains. Nonetheless time takes no heed in my trivial troubles as I find myself fully immersed in college applications, AP classes, and club responsibilities.

I am buried deep in manila envelopes, labels, books, notebooks, and email. Not an unusual sight I suppose. Just perhaps manila envelopes and labels have recently joined the bandwagon. Oh yes, the wonderful months of the college application process. What sweet bliss we seniors endure along with the agonizing curiosity and anxiety in the months to follow after we hit the "submit" button on November 1st, November 30th, December 31st, January 1st, January 2nd...whenever your deadline is. From now until about March, life will be a blur of applications, both paper and electronic forms of repetitious questions: Last, First, Middle Name? SSN? Phone Number? Address? Grades? GPA? SAT/ACT? Class rank? Misdemeanor or felony? and so on. Notice that about half of the information required are answered in number form. It is by no coincidence, I don't think, that numbers do play a great role in who we are, whether it be to determine which region you are from (area code), identifying exactly who you are through the government (SSN), or assessing your knowledge (SAT/ACT/IQ). But I shouldn't complain. It could be a lot worst. Imagine permanent branded on your forehead not only with your SSN, but your SAT scores, state testing percentages, class rank, IQ, and whatever numbers one could use to assess someone at first impression. Now THAT is dreadful. Good thing there's this thing called essay(s).

Meet my cousin Kristin. She attends Fairburn School in Westwood. Her favorite teacher, Mr. C, recently retired. She wanted to keep in touch, but had no way of doing so because he did not leave any contact information. So like how high school kids would Facebook some teachers at the end of the year, she Googled him. She wasn’t too successful, though she did find him on the Fairburn school website. By the way, Kristin, my teacher Googling cousin, is six years old.

The following is a reflection of thoughts upon the news of a friend who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of cancer.

Like the fine grainy sand running through our fingers, almost like water slipping between our fingers, the power of control is definitely not rightfully ours. As much as we would like to believe that we, and I quote Max, "hold the power to our future," sometimes there are just extenuating circumstances so beyond our wildest imaginations, dreams, fantasies - whatever you may call it, that are beyond our grasp. No, I am not speaking about the control of a night in which you severely failed to study for your calculus exam because you stayed on AIM until 2 in the morning, or your parents laying down the law and keeping you within the four wall confinements of your house, or even over your yearning for a boy who you may think is the most beautiful creature that prowls this planet, but rather, I speak on a more simple level, a deviant from the forces of society, I speak of the power of nature. Not just any force of nature, but cancer. Perhaps at this time and age, cancer is merely a concept in which we are aware of its dangers and deadly potential. We would never imagine that at a ripe age of seventeen, someone could fall victim. Its absolutely surreal. At least for me at the moment. I quote Alex, "We know that these things can happen, but we would never imagine that it can happen to someone so close [to us]." For the most part, it is true. Granted that many have the basic necessities for survival, we don't think much of what could happen to us, we feel as if we can control our fate to succeed in school, go on the college, and pursue a dashing career. It provides a sense of security as we devise this road to construct, but pot holes and detours sometimes just can't be prevented. It is not a pessimistic view of "life," but a realistic take. It's also called growing up.

So I've been getting back into this Anti-Flag mood, I'm not quite sure if its out of political annoyance or for its catchy beats and an educational-source-of-truth, like "depleted uranium is a war crime." I mean, how many of you knew that? and what exactly is depleted uranium anyway (maybe I should check with Myagkova... or not.) Here's a sample:

I have finally decided to return to my dearly beloved blog that I've been on a hiatus for about a month. My goodness, how many things have happened since April. I now find myself (almost) liberated from AP testing, and virtually any other state/nationwide testing and I have also found myself in a state of deep, developing nostalgia as the school year approaches its end at an exponential rate. ): the seniors! <3

btw, i am currently very into this band my friend told me about, cinematic sunrise!

MeanStreet 03.08: Chiodos

So i asked my dad to bring home one of those "crazy people magazine" (as he calls it) from work cos i wanted to browse for bands and what not, and to my utmost surprise, the first one he brings back is one with Chiodos on the cover! yea, so that was pretty exciting. here's an excerpt from the article:

"At a sold-out, jam-packed Chiodos show in NYC, a male fan on an upper balcony rocks out as though his very life depends on it. He bangs his head and hangs over the rail of the balcony as he balances his torso on the bar. It's as if he's possessed by Chiodos' music.
Eventually, gravity gets the best of him, and the fan falls over the balcony, crashing into the crowd and landing on his head. Miraculously he avoids serious injury.

Ten minutes later, he's back on the balcony, thrashing about with even more reckless, furious abandon.

When I tell this story to Chiodos keyboardist Bradley Bell and vocalist Craig Owens, they aren't taken aback or surprised by the turn of events. In fact, it's pretty much par for the course when you're a Chiodos fan.

'As long as he is OK and didn't break his neck, I think thats awesome,' Bell says. 'I encourage it. That kid obviously did not care what anyone around him thought of him, and there was was, losing control and loving what he was doing in that moment. That's what we want: People coming to our shows and leaving their problems behind. That's why we play music. Tonight was Good Question's show at B.B. King Club in Hollywood. It was pretty swell, all except for the unexpected "$8 fee for 'drinks'" for everyone under 21.

Some pictures. Red Lite Hype was playing when we came in. Uh. I don't have much to say about them, except they were uh...not that great? Henry: "...drummer needs to shut up", Addison concurred and added that "the drummer was repetitious." Other various comments included the four inch wedges the singer wore and her paramore-type-look. (btw, their guitarist really really really looked like craig owens of chiodos) Good Question played a pretty good set! I was so bummed that i had to leave early ): boo. The pictures didnt turn out that well x.x

despite Sadies being on the fourteenth of March, I am going. so. yay. aaand the shirts are done! :D

lately, things have been a total whirlwind with events dashing here and there and me barely able to keep up. extremely tiring, in fact, it makes me crave for spring break to come a little fasterrr. (pleaaaaaaase?)

at this point, first period chem feels like a total joke. seriously, i am not learning anything other than a rehash of what i have learned last year in chem and half lives in algebra 2. it does not help that students teach by reading off the book (i am guilty of this) and expect that the class absorbs the words and somehow can translate book knowledge into AP mode for solving problems. OH and it definitely does not help when a random test on nuclear chem is given and the problems are borderline in a different language! asl;dkfjldsjf.

in other news, uncertainty certainly kills.

I am sitting here on a cold march 1st staring at my chemistry lab. surprisingly i do not have any motivation to pick up my pencil to trace the dots that are suppose to form a line to intersect another line to... yea. theres chemistry for you, different coloured lines intersecting each other at a common point to form a pla--woops. wrong class.

anyway, today droned by, except during the hours of 2 and 6 when i was doing selections for IDEA mag. even then, i spent the better part of those hours reading literature that shouted out "i hate my life," "kill me now," and "my-heart-has-been-shredded-to-pieces-like-a-shredder-does-to-
paper." well, i over exaggerate. nonetheless, by the 5th poem in out of 93, even i felt like slitting wrists and blacking my eyes[1]. buuut, all in all, it was fun i guess, pouring over the artwork, raiding sandy's food supply, watching reruns of friends while selecting pieces, and oh! we have a t-shirt and jacket design! yikes, i gotta remember to call jade for a quote on the shirt and jackets.

i am out for now. gonna attempt, i mean, tackle chemistry.
